What this trial studies
This pilot study aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of bovine colostrum as a prebiotic for preventing recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs) in children. A total of sixty children diagnosed with recurrent UTIs will be enrolled and randomly assigned to receive either bovine colostrum or a placebo for one month. Participants will be monitored for clinical symptoms and undergo urine analysis and culture at baseline and monthly for six months. The study seeks to provide an alternative approach to antibiotic prophylaxis in light of increasing bacterial resistance.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are children with documented recurrent UTIs as defined by established clinical guidelines.
Not a fit: Patients with allergies to bovine colostrum or those with urinary devices or stones may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could reduce the frequency of recurrent UTIs in children without relying on antibiotics.
How similar studies have performed: While there is limited research specifically on bovine colostrum for UTI prevention, similar prebiotic approaches have shown promise in other infection contexts.
Eligibility criteria
