Using advanced imaging to understand hearing loss

Role of Diffusion Tensor-magnetic Resonance Imaging in Investigating Sensorineural Hearing Loss

Assiut University · NCT06434129

What this trial studies

This study investigates the role of Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) and auditory tractography in patients with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) who are candidates for cochlear implantation. It aims to enhance diagnostic capabilities by mapping the auditory pathways and determining the functional integrity of these pathways when standard assessments are inconclusive. The study includes patients with varying degrees of hearing loss and seeks to inform clinical decision-making regarding cochlear implantation and alternative rehabilitation strategies. Ultimately, it aims to create a comprehensive auditory map to validate the findings and improve patient outcomes.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are patients with audiometrically proven sensorineural hearing loss who are scheduled for cochlear implantation.

Not a fit: Patients with neurological or psychiatric conditions affecting stability during MRI, those with cochlear implants, or those with contraindications for MRI may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to better-informed decisions regarding cochlear implantation and improved outcomes for patients with hearing loss.

How similar studies have performed: While the use of DTI in auditory research is emerging, this specific application in SNHL and cochlear implantation is relatively novel and has not been extensively tested in prior studies.
