Using actimetry to assess physical inactivity in COPD patients

Validation by Three-dimensional Actimetry Measurements of a Predictive Algorithm for Excessive Inactivity in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Patients

Observational Association pour la Complementarite des Connaissances et des Pratiques de la Pneumologie · NCT05918003

This study is testing a new way to measure how inactive people with COPD are by using a special device to see if it can help identify those who need more physical activity.

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to validate and improve a Machine Learning Algorithm (MLA) that predicts excessive inactivity in patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) using a physiological GOLD standard of three-dimensional actimetry. The study will involve a smaller population of 104 COPD patients who have undergone a digital consultation. The goal is to accurately assess daily physical activity levels, which are crucial for improving patient outcomes and guiding rehabilitation efforts. By comparing the MLA's predictions with actimetry data, the study seeks to enhance the detection of patients who are excessively inactive.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are patients diagnosed with COPD across all GOLD stages who have participated in a Colibri-COPD digital consultation.

Not a fit: Patients with other unstable conditions or recent exacerbations, surgeries, or accidents limiting their movements may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to better identification and management of COPD patients who are physically inactive, ultimately improving their quality of life and reducing exacerbations.

How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have shown success in using actimetry as a GOLD standard for assessing physical activity in COPD patients, indicating that this approach is validated.
