Using a flexible suction sheath with flexible ureteroscopy for lower-pole kidney stones

Outcomes of Using Flexible and Navigable Suction Sheath With Flexible Ureteroscopy in Treatment of Lower Calyceal Stones: A Prospective Study

Not applicable Interventional Zagazig University · NCT07238803

What this trial studies

The trial will enroll adult patients with lower calyceal (lower-pole) kidney stones who are scheduled for flexible ureteroscopy (fURS). During the procedure, surgeons will use a flexible, navigable suction ureteral access sheath alongside the fURS to aspirate stone fragments. Key outcomes include postoperative stone-free status, need for secondary interventions, and infectious or bleeding complications; standard exclusions include active urinary infection, coagulopathy, and renal or ureteric anomalies. Procedures and follow-up imaging will be performed at Zagazig University Hospitals to capture procedure success and complications.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults aged 18 years or older with lower calyceal kidney stones who are scheduled for flexible ureteroscopy and do not have active UTI, coagulopathy, or renal/ureteric anomalies.

Not a fit: Patients with active urinary tract infections, bleeding disorders, renal or ureteric anatomical anomalies, or those who decline participation are unlikely to benefit from this protocol.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, using a navigable suction sheath could raise stone-free rates, reduce the need for repeat procedures, and lower some procedure-related complications.

How similar studies have performed: Early reports and registry data suggest vacuum-assisted or suction ureteral sheaths can improve stone-free rates and reduce residual fragments, but high-quality randomized evidence is still limited.
