What this trial studies

This prospective single-blinded intervention feasibility study aims to utilize the AIRE-2 device and FoodMarble app to explore the relationship between diet, symptoms, and microbial fermentation in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) and their household controls. Participants will measure exhaled hydrogen and methane levels before and after meals while logging their dietary intake and symptoms over a five-week period. The study seeks to assess the feasibility of these tools in collecting relevant data and to gather preliminary insights into how diet impacts symptoms and gas production in IBD patients.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates include adults aged 18-75 with a confirmed diagnosis of IBD who are in clinical remission and experience IBS-like symptoms.

Not a fit: Patients with active IBD, recent antibiotic use, or certain medical conditions such as diabetes or mental disorders may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide valuable insights into dietary management for patients with inflammatory bowel diseases, potentially improving their quality of life.

How similar studies have performed: While the specific use of the AIRE-2 device and FoodMarble app is novel, similar studies exploring diet and breath analysis in gastrointestinal conditions have shown promise.
