Using 3D organoids to study blood cancer and treatment responses

Novel 3D Hematological Malignancy Organoid Platform to Study Disease Biology and Perform Chemosensitivity Assays for Patient-Specific Care

Observational Wake Forest University Health Sciences · NCT03890614

What this trial studies

This project aims to utilize a novel 3D organoid technique to analyze chemosensitivity in patients with hematologic malignancies. By creating organoids from bone marrow aspirates, the study will evaluate how these organoids respond to various chemotherapy combinations, providing insights into personalized treatment options. The research will also assess tumor markers and genetic characteristics to better understand tumor biology and resistance mechanisms. The ultimate goal is to validate the predictive value of these organoid responses against historical patient treatment outcomes.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates include patients with suspected or confirmed hematologic malignancies who are undergoing a bone marrow biopsy.

Not a fit: Patients who do not have a hematologic malignancy or are not undergoing a bone marrow biopsy may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could lead to more personalized and effective treatment strategies for patients with hematologic malignancies.

How similar studies have performed: While the use of 3D organoids is a relatively novel approach, similar studies have shown promise in other cancer types, indicating potential for success in this area.
