Understanding why some patients struggle to stop mechanical ventilation

Changes in Respiratory Mechanics in Patients With Failed Ventilator Withdrawal

The First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University · NCT06424314

This study looks at why some people with COPD have trouble stopping mechanical ventilation after being on it for a while, by testing their breathing and comparing the results of those who succeed and those who don’t.

What this trial studies

This observational study investigates the physiological mechanisms behind weaning failure in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who have been on invasive mechanical ventilation for at least 48 hours. Participants will undergo a spontaneous breathing test (SBT), and their demographic and physiological data will be collected prior to the test. Based on the SBT outcomes, patients will be categorized into successful and failed withdrawal groups, allowing for a comparison of physiological changes during the SBT between these groups.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults with COPD who have been on invasive mechanical ventilation for a minimum of 48 hours.

Not a fit: Patients with neuromuscular diseases, postoperative conditions, or traumatic brain injuries may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved strategies for weaning patients off mechanical ventilation, enhancing recovery and outcomes for individuals with COPD.

How similar studies have performed: While this study explores a specific aspect of weaning failure, similar observational studies have shown promise in understanding mechanical ventilation outcomes.
