What this trial studies
This observational study aims to explore the preferences of life-sustaining treatments among patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). It focuses on initiating discussions about end-of-life care plans early, allowing patients to express their treatment preferences clearly. The study seeks to alleviate the burden on family members and healthcare providers by providing insights into patient choices regarding life-sustaining interventions. By gathering data from patients who are cognitively able to communicate, the study aims to fill a gap in existing research related to treatment preferences in kidney disease.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults over 20 years old diagnosed with end-stage renal disease or chronic kidney disease stage V who can communicate effectively.
Not a fit: Patients with severe cognitive impairments or those who are critically ill may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance patient-centered care by ensuring that treatment decisions align with the preferences of individuals with end-stage renal disease.
How similar studies have performed: While there is limited research focusing specifically on kidney disease patients' treatment preferences, studies in other areas have shown the importance of understanding patient choices in end-of-life care.
