Understanding the tumor microenvironment in ovarian cancer
Study of the Role of the Tumor Microenvironment in Ovarian Cancer
This study is trying to create mini versions of ovarian tumors from patients with advanced cancer to see how tumor cells, immune cells, and bacteria interact, which could help us understand how ovarian cancer grows and how to treat it better.

What this trial studies
This observational study aims to generate organoids from patients with stage III and IV epithelial ovarian cancer to explore the interactions between tumor cells, immune cells, and microbiota within the tumor microenvironment. By utilizing a three-dimensional cell culture system, the study seeks to replicate the essential properties of ovarian tissue in vitro, which may help elucidate the molecular mechanisms behind ovarian cancer progression. The research will involve collecting tumor and adjacent normal tissue from patients undergoing surgical removal of their tumors, allowing for a detailed analysis of the tumor microenvironment and potential therapeutic responses.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults aged 18 to 80 with a primary diagnosis of serous ovarian carcinoma at FIGO Stage III or IV.
Not a fit: Patients with non-epithelial ovarian tumors or those who are not undergoing surgical intervention may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to more personalized and effective therapies for patients with ovarian cancer.
How similar studies have performed: While the use of organoids in cancer research is gaining traction, this specific approach to studying the tumor microenvironment in ovarian cancer is relatively novel.
