What this trial studies

This observational study focuses on patients over 75 years old with stage five chronic kidney disease, examining their symptom burden in relation to treatment options, either dialysis or conservative kidney management (CKM). The Integrated Palliative Outcome Scale Renal (IPOS-Renal), a newly validated tool in Danish, will be used to systematically record and analyze symptoms experienced by these patients. The study aims to correlate treatment choices with symptom burden and mortality rates, providing valuable insights into patient experiences and outcomes.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are patients over 75 years old with stage five chronic kidney disease who have chosen between dialysis and CKM.

Not a fit: Patients who are eligible for kidney transplantation or have cognitive impairments may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could improve symptom management and quality of life for elderly patients with advanced kidney disease.

How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have indicated that symptom management approaches in similar patient populations can lead to improved quality of life, suggesting potential success for this study.
