What this trial studies
This research aims to explore the stigma and substance use barriers affecting pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake among Black sexual minority men in the Southeastern United States. The study focuses on assessing how these factors influence PrEP linkage, adherence, and persistence, particularly in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. By providing evidence-based counseling to address these barriers, the study seeks to enhance PrEP engagement among substance-using individuals in this high-risk population.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are Black men aged 18 and older who report recent substance use and have engaged in condomless anal sex with men.
Not a fit: Patients who do not identify as Black or who do not report recent substance use may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could significantly increase PrEP uptake and adherence among Black sexual minority men, thereby reducing HIV transmission rates in this vulnerable group.
How similar studies have performed: While there have been studies addressing PrEP use in various populations, this specific focus on stigma and substance use among Black sexual minority men is relatively novel.
