What this trial studies
This observational study aims to determine the prevalence of complications in post-anesthesia care units (PACUs) across three tertiary hospitals in Ethiopia. By analyzing data collected from surgical patients admitted to these units, the study will identify risk factors associated with PACU complications, such as patient demographics and intraoperative events. The findings will be compared with data from a tertiary hospital in Spain to provide a broader context. The goal is to enhance patient safety and inform healthcare policies regarding PACU organization and management.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are patients admitted to PACUs following surgery under general, regional, or monitored anesthesia.
Not a fit: Patients who are directly transferred to the ICU or discharged immediately after surgery will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved patient safety and quality of care in post-anesthesia settings.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies in neighboring African countries have shown varying degrees of PACU complications, indicating that this area of research is relevant and potentially impactful.
