What this trial studies

This observational study aims to explore the barriers and enablers affecting the use of hydroxyurea among patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) in Jamaica. It will involve collecting data through questionnaires from SCD patients aged 18 and over, caregivers of children with SCD, and healthcare providers such as physicians, nurses, and pharmacists. The study seeks to identify factors that influence access to care and the utilization of hydroxyurea, which is crucial for improving health outcomes in SCD patients. The findings will inform strategies to enhance healthcare access and hydroxyurea uptake, potentially benefiting patients and the healthcare system.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study include adults with sickle cell disease and caregivers of children with the condition.

Not a fit: Patients under the age of 18 or those who are acutely ill may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved access to hydroxyurea treatment for sickle cell disease patients, enhancing their health outcomes and quality of life.

How similar studies have performed: While there may be studies on hydroxyurea use in other regions, this specific focus on barriers and enablers in Jamaica is novel and has not been extensively tested.
