Treponema parvum in the bacteria under the gums of people with periodontitis
Prevalence of Treponema Parvum in Subgingival Microbiome of Patients With Periodontitis: A Case-Control Study
This project will see if the bacteria Treponema parvum is present and how much of it is in gum-pocket samples from people with periodontitis.

What this trial studies
This observational study will collect subgingival plaque samples using sterile paper points and record clinical periodontal measurements from enrolled participants. Samples will be analyzed by quantitative PCR (qPCR) to detect Treponema parvum and estimate its relative abundance in the biofilm. The study will relate T. parvum presence and quantity to clinical parameters such as pocket depth and attachment loss. Findings aim to clarify whether T. parvum is associated with periodontitis and could guide future diagnostic or treatment research.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults with a diagnosis of generalized periodontitis who have at least 20 teeth and who do not meet any exclusion criteria (for example, recent antibiotic/NSAID use, recent periodontal therapy, ongoing orthodontics, valve replacement requiring prophylaxis, or pregnancy/lactation) are ideal candidates.
Not a fit: People without periodontitis or those excluded due to recent antibiotics/NSAIDs, recent periodontal therapy, ongoing orthodontic treatment, valve replacement needing prophylactic antibiotics, or pregnancy/lactation are unlikely to benefit from participation.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If a clear link is found, detecting T. parvum could help improve diagnosis or point to targets for more personalized periodontal treatment.
How similar studies have performed: Related microbiome and qPCR studies have associated other Treponema species with periodontitis, but the specific role and prevalence of T. parvum remain relatively understudied.
Eligibility criteria
