What this trial studies

This research focuses on a novel approach called 'scotoma awareness' training to assist individuals suffering from Macular Degeneration, a leading cause of central vision loss. The study aims to accelerate the development of a preferred retinal locus (PRL) by enhancing patients' awareness of their scotoma through gaze-contingent displays. By understanding individual eye movement patterns and compensatory strategies, the study seeks to create personalized rehabilitation strategies for those with severe vision impairment. The ultimate goal is to improve the quality of life for patients by maximizing their use of remaining vision.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are individuals with severely impaired vision (20/100 or worse) due to Macular Degeneration, who have experienced this level of severity for at least two years.

Not a fit: Patients with bilateral retinal scotomas larger than 20° diameter or those unable to participate in eye tracking may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could significantly enhance visual function and independence for patients with Macular Degeneration.

How similar studies have performed: While this approach is innovative, previous studies have shown promise in training healthy individuals, suggesting potential for success in this population.

* Medical record review indicates this disease severity level has been present for at least 2 years.

Exclusion Criteria:

* Inability to sit still in eye tracker for extended periods
* Inability to visualize iris on video eye tracker
* Bilateral retinal scotomas larger than 20° diameter
