Testing glucose tolerance right after childbirth

Immediate Postpartum Glucose Tolerance Testing Among Gestational Diabetics: A Comparison to the Gold Standard

MemorialCare Health System · NCT04199676

What this trial studies

This study compares the accuracy of a two-hour glucose tolerance test conducted during postpartum hospitalization with the standard glucose tolerance test performed six weeks after delivery. It aims to determine if testing immediately postpartum can improve compliance rates among women diagnosed with gestational diabetes. The study will capture data on women with gestational diabetes to assess the effectiveness of immediate testing in identifying those with persistent glucose intolerance. By addressing low compliance rates, the study seeks to enhance early diagnosis and treatment opportunities for women at risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are women who are pregnant or have recently given birth (postpartum day 0 or 1) and have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes.

Not a fit: Patients who are medically excluded from completing glucose tolerance testing or those who have received steroid treatment within 10 days prior to enrollment may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could lead to earlier identification and management of glucose intolerance in postpartum women, reducing the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

How similar studies have performed: While the approach of immediate postpartum glucose testing is innovative, similar studies have not been widely reported, indicating this may be a novel approach.
