What this trial studies

This study tests the effectiveness of a telehealth version of the Cognitive-Remediation of Executive and Adaptive Deficits in Youth (C-READY) intervention aimed at adolescents with sickle cell disease (SCD). The intervention focuses on improving cognitive skills and self-management abilities over four weeks through eight one-on-one telehealth sessions with a trained therapist. Caregivers are also involved through weekly phone sessions to enhance accountability and support. The goal is to facilitate a smoother transition to adult self-care for youth facing cognitive challenges due to SCD.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adolescents aged 10-18 diagnosed with sickle cell disease who are actively followed at Children's of Alabama Hospital and are English-speaking.

Not a fit: Patients with a history of seizures, overt stroke, intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder, or those currently on psychotropic medications may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this intervention could significantly improve self-efficacy and self-care skills in adolescents with sickle cell disease, aiding their transition to adulthood.

How similar studies have performed: While cognitive remediation interventions have been explored in various contexts, this specific telehealth adaptation for adolescents with sickle cell disease is a novel approach.
