What this trial studies

This pilot compares an 8-week online Recovery Education and Support (RES) program led by trained teen peers and peer support specialists to standard discharge care for adolescents aged 15–18 recently released from an acute psychiatric facility. Participants are assigned to one of two cohorts and receive virtual one-on-one and small-group sessions intended to increase recovery knowledge, outpatient engagement, and medication adherence. Outcomes include changes in suicidality, depression, anxiety, re-hospitalization rates, and measures of mental health recovery and service use. The intervention is delivered remotely but coordinated through the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: High school teens aged 15–18 who were recently discharged from inpatient psychiatric care or the emergency department with suicidal ideation, a suicide attempt, depression, and/or anxiety are ideal candidates, excluding those with primary substance use disorder, schizophrenia spectrum disorders, intellectual developmental disorder, or level II/III autism.

Not a fit: Teens whose primary diagnosis is substance use disorder, schizophrenia spectrum disorder, intellectual developmental disorder, or level II/III autism, or those unable to participate online, are unlikely to benefit from this intervention.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the program could lower suicidal thoughts and hospital readmissions while improving recovery, outpatient follow-up, and medication adherence for discharged teens.

How similar studies have performed: Peer-led and digital recovery programs for adolescents have shown promising but mixed results in prior research, and this pilot builds on that preliminary evidence.
