What this trial studies
This is a randomized controlled trial recruiting Hong Kong–linked families who live in Shenzhen, with parent–child pairs randomized in a 2:1 ratio to the intervention or control arm. Parents attend four group activity sessions and children attend two condensed sessions that teach emotion-regulation skills and moderation in consumer electronics use. Outcomes include changes in resilience, emotion regulation, psychological well-being, family harmony, and social connectedness. The project is run in collaboration with the International Social Service Hong Kong Branch (Shenzhen) and funded by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust and City University of Hong Kong.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are parent–child pairs where the child is in grades 5–12, both live in Shenzhen, and at least one family member is a Hong Kong resident and able to attend the scheduled sessions.
Not a fit: Those with current severe physical or mental illnesses, or families who do not live in Shenzhen or lack Hong Kong residency ties, are unlikely to benefit or be eligible.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the program could strengthen parents' and children's emotion‑regulation skills, lower family conflict, and boost resilience and psychological well‑being.
How similar studies have performed: Similar family-based emotion‑regulation interventions have shown modest improvements in youth emotion regulation and family functioning, but the cross‑boundary Hong Kong–Shenzhen context is relatively novel.
