What this trial studies
This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of using WhatsApp to support smoking cessation among patients with rheumatologic diseases. Participants will be randomly assigned to either a usual care group, receiving standard smoking cessation interventions, or an intervention group, which will receive additional motivational and informative messages via WhatsApp. The primary outcome will be the quit rates at 3, 6, and 12 months, while secondary outcomes will include access to cessation support and clinic admission rates. This innovative approach seeks to leverage technology to enhance smoking cessation efforts in this specific patient population.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates include active smokers aged 18 and over who have been diagnosed with an inflammatory rheumatic disease and are seeking treatment at a rheumatology outpatient clinic.
Not a fit: Patients with active psychiatric disorders or cognitive dysfunction may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could significantly improve smoking cessation rates among patients with rheumatologic diseases.
How similar studies have performed: While the use of mobile messaging for smoking cessation is gaining traction, this specific approach targeting rheumatologic patients is relatively novel and has not been extensively tested.
