What this trial studies
Caregivers of adult patients scheduled for allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplant are recruited during pre-transplant clinic visits and enrolled at a Toronto transplant center. The adapted psychoeducational intervention consists of eight interactive sessions delivered over 12 weeks via Microsoft Teams by a nurse facilitator, covering stress management, coping strategies, energy management, goal-setting, communication skills, and resource access. Participants complete questionnaires before the intervention, one month after transplant, and three months after transplant to measure feasibility and acceptability. The study focuses on feasibility and acceptability rather than clinical efficacy at this stage.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adult informal caregivers of patients with hematologic malignancies scheduled for allogeneic stem cell transplant who can provide care from transplant day through 100 days, speak English, and can start the program within two weeks post-transplant are ideal candidates.
Not a fit: Caregivers who are under 18, non-English speaking, unable to attend online sessions, or unable to commit to the intervention timeline are unlikely to benefit from this program.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, caregivers could experience better coping, lower stress, and improved ability to support patients through the transplant period.
How similar studies have performed: Psychoeducational interventions have shown benefits for caregiver stress and coping in oncology settings, but this specific adapted program for allogeneic HCT caregivers is being tested for feasibility and is less established.
