Study of the mechanical properties of diseased blood vessel tissues

The Biomechanical Study of Diseased Human Carotid, Femoral and Abdominal Aortic Tissue

Observational University Hospital of Limerick · NCT05802706

What this trial studies

This observational study investigates the mechanical properties of atherosclerotic plaque from human carotid and femoral arteries, as well as abdominal aortic aneurysm tissue. It aims to correlate these tissue mechanics with novel blood-based biomarkers related to cardiovascular calcification. The study involves patients undergoing standard surgical procedures for plaque removal, allowing for the collection and analysis of tissue samples without any experimental interventions. The findings could enhance understanding of vascular diseases and their biomarkers.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are patients with arterial plaque who are undergoing treatment and can provide informed consent.

Not a fit: Patients who are unable to give informed consent or are seriously ill may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for vascular diseases.

How similar studies have performed: While this approach is observational and correlational, similar studies have shown promise in understanding the mechanics of vascular diseases and their relationship with biomarkers.
