What this trial studies
Researchers will randomly assign students at three California institutions to one of three groups: a waitlist control, use of the Flourish mobile app twice weekly, or use of the app twice weekly with a "Flourish Buddy" for six weeks. The app combines a digital positive-psychology toolkit and an AI chatbot, and participants complete four short online surveys measuring positive affect, loneliness, belonging, and related well‑being outcomes. Comparison across groups will test whether access and buddy-supported use produce greater improvements than usual campus resources. Study enrollment requires age 18+ and informed consent.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal participants are students aged 18 or older enrolled at UC Berkeley, Foothill College, or Chapman University who want to try a digital program to boost well‑being.
Not a fit: Students with serious mental health conditions requiring clinical care, those unwilling to use a mobile app twice weekly, or those not enrolled at the participating campuses are unlikely to benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the app could increase positive emotions, reduce loneliness, and strengthen students' sense of belonging.
How similar studies have performed: Prior digital positive-psychology and peer-supported interventions in student populations have shown modest benefits for well‑being, though evidence for AI-chatbot components is still limited.
