What this trial studies

This interventional program delivers a tailored firearm safety prevention strategy called "Store Safely" to families with children living in rural areas of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The program is implemented with local public health partners and requires participants to have internet access for program materials and surveys. Households complete baseline and follow-up surveys about firearm ownership and storage practices to measure change after the intervention. Participants who previously enrolled in the 2020 pilot are excluded to focus on new enrollments.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal participants are English-speaking adults who live in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, have at least one child under 18 at home, own at least one firearm, and can access a computer or mobile device with wifi.

Not a fit: Households without firearms, without children under 18, those living outside the Upper Peninsula, non-English speakers, people without access to required technology, or those already enrolled in the 2020 pilot are not likely to benefit from this program.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the program could increase safe firearm storage in participating homes and thereby reduce the risk of unintentional injuries and youth suicide.

How similar studies have performed: Previous community-based safe-storage interventions have shown modest improvements in home storage practices, so this work builds on existing evidence for behavior-change approaches.
