What this trial studies

This interventional program offers adolescents with sickle cell disease guided songwriting sessions as an active music therapy approach that combines composition, performance, and relaxation techniques. Participants will create and play their own songs while researchers collect feedback on practicality and acceptability. Standardized self-report anxiety measures and feasibility questionnaires will be administered before and after the intervention to track changes and usability. The work is conducted in a pediatric setting at the Mayo Clinic and targets English-literate teens who can provide assent.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adolescents aged 11–18 with any type of sickle cell disease who are receiving care at a pediatric center, can read and write English, and can provide assent.

Not a fit: Patients who have transitioned to adult care or who have visual, hearing, or cognitive impairments that prevent completing songwriting activities or study measures may not benefit.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could give teens a low-cost, creative tool to lower anxiety and improve coping with sickle cell disease and its symptoms.

How similar studies have performed: Music therapy has shown benefits for anxiety and pain in pediatric and adult populations, but songwriting as a structured intervention in adolescents with sickle cell disease is relatively novel.
