Smoking's effect on lower-limb speed and coordination in young adults.

Investigation of the Impact of Smoking Addiction on the Speed and Coordination of Lower Extremity Movements

Saglik Bilimleri Universitesi · NCT07061522

We will test whether young adults who smoke have slower or less coordinated leg movements compared with non-smokers.

What this trial studies

This observational case-control study compares motor coordination and sprint speed between smokers and non-smokers aged 18–25. Participants are classified using DSM-IV-TR nicotine dependence criteria and the Fagerström Test and will complete the Lower Extremity Motor Coordination Test (LEMOCOT) and a 30-meter sprint under standardized laboratory conditions. BMI and bimalleolar diameter and circumference will be recorded to control for body-size confounders. Data will be analyzed to see if chronic smoking is associated with measurable deficits in lower-limb motor function.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal participants are literate, cooperative adults aged 18–25 with BMI 18.5–29.9 who either smoke at least one cigarette daily for 12 months or more or are non-smokers for comparison.

Not a fit: People with orthopedic, neurological, or neuromuscular conditions, chronic pulmonary or cardiac disease, cognitive impairment, or BMI ≥30 are excluded and unlikely to benefit from this protocol.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If smoking is linked to poorer lower-limb function, the findings could support early prevention and targeted rehabilitation to help preserve mobility in young smokers.

How similar studies have performed: Previous research links smoking to vascular and neuromuscular harm, but few controlled studies have directly measured lower-limb coordination and sprint performance, making this approach relatively novel.
