What this trial studies
This clinical trial evaluates the effectiveness of a smartphone-based intervention called Smart-T Alcohol aimed at reducing alcohol consumption among adults experiencing homelessness. The study will recruit 600 participants from shelters in Dallas, TX, and Oklahoma City, OK, who will be randomly assigned to receive either standard shelter-based treatment or the Smart-T Alcohol intervention. Participants will engage in daily self-monitoring through a mobile app to assess their drinking behaviors and psychosocial factors over a period of 13 weeks. The trial aims to determine if the smartphone intervention can lead to significant reductions in alcohol use compared to usual care.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults aged 18 and older who are currently experiencing homelessness and report hazardous alcohol use.
Not a fit: Patients who do not consume alcohol or are under 18 years old may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this intervention could significantly reduce alcohol misuse among homeless individuals, improving their overall health and stability.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown promise with mobile health interventions for alcohol misuse, suggesting potential for success in this novel approach.
