What this trial studies
This is a feasibility interventional program that aims to reduce prolonged sitting in community-dwelling older adults using a smartphone-supported physical activity approach. Participants are overweight adults aged 65+ who sit at least six hours per day and can walk independently. The intervention focuses on breaking up sedentary time and increasing light movement, with outcomes including cardiometabolic markers and physical function measures. The work is conducted at the School of Nursing and Health Studies at Hong Kong Metropolitan University and is designed to test acceptability and preliminary signals of benefit.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are community-dwelling adults aged 65 or older who are overweight, use a smartphone, sit six or more hours per day, and can walk independently with or without aids.
Not a fit: People who cannot walk independently or who have health conditions that prevent following the activity program or using a smartphone are unlikely to benefit from this intervention.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the program could reduce daily sitting time and lead to improvements in cardiometabolic health and physical function for participating older adults.
How similar studies have performed: Previous sedentary-behavior interventions in older adults have shown modest improvements in activity patterns and some cardiometabolic measures, though larger definitive trials are limited.
