Shortening waiting time for cataract surgery
Reducing Patient Waiting Time for Cataract Surgery Through Improved Coordination Between Ward and Operation Theatre
This project will try standard operating procedures to see if better coordination between wards and the operating room shortens waiting time for adults having cataract surgery.

What this trial studies
This interventional study will implement SOPs and directly observe patient flow between the free ward (B1), paid ward (C1), and the operating theatre at a tertiary eye hospital. Two trained investigators will collect quantitative timing data and qualitative observations for each participant from ward admission through transfer into the operating theatre. Demographic details, events, errors, deviations, and process timings will be recorded in structured forms. Data will be analyzed to identify bottlenecks and practical coordination changes to reduce delays and errors.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults scheduled for elective cataract surgery at the participating hospital (age over 20) are eligible to participate.
Not a fit: Patients under 20, those not undergoing cataract surgery, emergency cases, or patients treated at other hospitals are unlikely to receive benefit from this intervention.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this could reduce patient waiting times, lower operational errors, and improve the safety and experience of cataract surgery patients.
How similar studies have performed: Previous quality-improvement work using SOPs and improved interdepartmental coordination has often reduced surgical delays and errors in other hospital settings, supporting this approach.
