What this trial studies
This prospective cohort at Jimma University Medical Center will enroll adults (≥18 years) admitted with sepsis who have no prior cardiac disease and categorize them by presence or absence of sepsis-associated cardiac involvement using clinical signs, biomarkers (troponin, BNP), ECG and echocardiography. Participants will receive standard sepsis care and be followed for one year to measure persistence of cardiac abnormalities, functional capacity, and survival. Data will be collected with structured checklists and analyzed using Kaplan-Meier survival curves, log-rank tests, and regression models to identify predictors of adverse outcomes. The work aims to provide long-term outcome data from a resource-limited, single-center setting in Ethiopia.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults aged 18 years or older admitted with sepsis at Jimma University Medical Center who have no pre-existing cardiac disease and agree to one-year follow-up.
Not a fit: Patients with established pre-existing cardiac disease are excluded and may not benefit from the study's findings, and those unable to complete follow-up may also not benefit.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the findings could identify which sepsis patients need closer cardiac monitoring and targeted management to reduce mortality and long-term heart dysfunction.
How similar studies have performed: Previous research has documented acute sepsis-associated myocardial dysfunction, but long-term outcomes and predictors are less well-defined, especially in low-income countries.
Eligibility criteria

Inclusion Criteria: * All adult patients aged 18 years and above diagnosed with sepsis admitted to Jimma University Medical Center during the study periods that are willing to participate and continue follow-up of their disease condition for at least one year. Exclusion Criteria: * Patients with any kind of pre-existing established cardiac disease prior to their sepsis diagnosis and those who are not willing to participate or not willing to have follow-up of their disease condition for at least one year.
