What this trial studies
This observational study aims to screen participants in Zhongshan and Wuzhou cities for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) by testing for Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) associated biomarkers such as EBNA1-IgA, VCA-IgA, and P85-Ab. Male participants and P85-Ab positive females will also undergo plasma EBV DNA testing. Those identified as high or moderate risk will be referred for further diagnostic procedures, including fiberoptic endoscopy and biopsy. Participants will be followed annually to monitor their health status and any developments related to NPC.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are residents of Zhongshan or Wuzhou cities who have no prior medical history of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.
Not a fit: Patients with severe cardiovascular, liver, or kidney diseases, or those with contraindications to fiberoptic endoscopy may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to earlier detection of nasopharyngeal carcinoma, improving patient outcomes.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown promise in using EBV biomarkers for screening nasopharyngeal carcinoma, indicating a potential for success in this approach.
