Screening for Atrial Fibrillation in Cancer Patients
Screening for Atrial Fibrillation in Patients With Cancer: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial
This study is testing if screening for atrial fibrillation with a quick heart test can help find this condition earlier in cancer patients aged 65 and older.

What this trial studies
This pilot randomized controlled trial aims to evaluate the effectiveness of screening for atrial fibrillation (AF) in patients aged 65 and older who have a current or past diagnosis of cancer. Participants will be randomly assigned to either a screening group, which will receive a 30-second ECG using the Kardia Mobile device, or a usual care group that will not undergo screening. The primary outcome is the detection of newly diagnosed AF through screening compared to standard care. The study seeks to address the gap in AF screening specifically within the cancer patient population, where AF incidence is notably higher.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are male and female patients aged 65 and older with a current diagnosis or history of cancer.
Not a fit: Patients with a known history of atrial fibrillation or those who are non-English-speaking will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to earlier detection of atrial fibrillation in cancer patients, potentially improving their clinical outcomes through timely anticoagulation.
How similar studies have performed: While randomized controlled trials for AF screening in the general population have shown success, this specific approach in cancer patients is novel and has not been extensively tested.
Eligibility criteria
Show full inclusion / exclusion criteria
Inclusion Criteria: 1. Male and female patients age ≥65 with a current diagnosis or history of cancer. 2. Patients currently undergoing or history of chemotherapy, radiotherapy or cancer related surgeries will be included. 3. The age is restricted to ≥65 years because prevalence of AF is extremely low. . Exclusion Criteria: 1. Known history of atrial fibrillation. 2. Non-English-speaking participants will not be enrolled
