Return to sports after knee replacement

Amendment to the Study "Prospective, Multicenter Investigation of Clinical Rehabilitation and Everyday Recovery Following Knee Joint Endoprosthetic Replacement" With Additional Return-to-sports-testing at One Participating Center

NA · Technical University of Munich · NCT07183475

What this trial studies

This amendment expands an ongoing follow-up protocol to add structured, level-based functional testing used in sports orthopaedics to patients after knee arthroplasty. Each participant's prior sport level is recorded with a structured history and then put through level-specific, validated functional tests; participants must pass Level 1 before proceeding to higher levels. The tests are modeled on established stepwise concepts (e.g., Keller et al.) to provide objective, performance-based criteria rather than solely clinician judgment. Patients who cannot understand the procedures or who do not participate in sports are excluded from the testing protocol.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults who have had unicondylar or bicondylar knee replacement, currently participate in sports, and can provide informed consent are ideal candidates.

Not a fit: People without a knee joint replacement, those who do not engage in sports, or those unable to follow testing instructions (for example due to language or compliance issues) are unlikely to benefit.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the project could give patients and clinicians objective, standardized criteria to guide a safer return to sports after knee replacement.

How similar studies have performed: Structured return-to-sport testing is already established and successful in sports orthopaedics (for example after ACL injury), but applying this stepwise approach to arthroplasty patients is novel.

Eligibility criteria

Show full inclusion / exclusion criteria
Inclusion Criteria:

* The study includes all patients with a history of unicondylar or bicondylar knee joint replacement and engagement in sports activity.
* All participating patients have provided their informed consent following comprehensive information and explanation.
* All participating patients have signed the informed consent form for study participation as well as the data protection declaration after receiving detailed information and clarification.

Exclusion Criteria:

* Patients who are unable to understand the patient information and study design (e.g., due to language barriers) or whose compliance is deemed insufficient by the study team
* No knee joint endoprosthesis implanted
* No engagement in athletic activity
