What this trial studies
This observational study aims to collect biospecimens, specifically pleural fluid, from patients diagnosed with lung cancer or pulmonary infections. By gathering these samples, researchers hope to gain insights into the underlying mechanisms of these conditions and develop new diagnostic tests and treatments. The registry will serve as a valuable resource for future research aimed at improving patient outcomes in lung-related diseases. Participants will include both inpatients and outpatients who meet specific clinical criteria.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults aged 18 and older who have been diagnosed with pleural fluid and are undergoing clinically indicated drainage due to lung cancer or pulmonary infection.
Not a fit: Patients with concurrent medical conditions that may prevent safe pleural fluid drainage or incarcerated individuals may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to advancements in the understanding and treatment of lung cancer and related infections.
How similar studies have performed: While this approach is not widely tested, similar studies involving biospecimen collection have shown promise in advancing cancer research.
Eligibility criteria
Show full inclusion / exclusion criteria
Inclusion Criteria: * Patients who are 18 years or older * Inpatients and outpatients * Diagnosed with pleural fluid, are referred for and undergo clinically indicated drainage who have clinical evidence of: * pulmonary infection (such as fever, leukocytosis, new or worsening infiltrate on chest x-ray, or clinical deterioration) with effusion * malignancy Exclusion Criteria: * A subject will not be eligible for inclusion in this registry if, in the investigator's (or treating clinician's) opinion, the patient has any concurrent medical condition that may preclude their ability to undergo pleural fluid drainage safely. * Incarcerated individuals
