What this trial studies
This pilot uses an evidence-based quality improvement (EBQI) approach to help primary care clinics design and implement organizational interventions tailored to local needs. Experts will facilitate collaborative planning with PACT teamlets to develop site-specific burnout reduction strategies. The intervention will be rolled out in a modified stepped-wedge design across five VA clinics within one VISN to test feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effectiveness. Results will inform how EBQI-facilitated interventions might be implemented in other VA facilities.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are VA primary care providers, registered nurses, clinical associates, and administrative associates who work regularly on Patient-Aligned Care Team (PACT) teamlets at the participating clinics.
Not a fit: Staff who are not regular members of PACT teamlets, members of excluded special teamlets, or personnel at VA sites outside the participating VISN are unlikely to be included or to receive direct benefit from this pilot.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the approach could reduce provider and staff burnout, improve retention, and enhance the quality and safety of patient care in VA primary care clinics.
How similar studies have performed: Organizational interventions have shown benefit for reducing clinician burnout and EBQI has been used successfully for implementing care improvements, but using EBQI specifically to reduce VA primary care burnout is a relatively novel, piloted application.
