What this trial studies

This is a type 3 hybrid effectiveness‑implementation pilot using human‑centered design to adapt and pilot a rideshare transportation intervention for patients with diabetic retinopathy and Medicaid. Investigators co‑designed PRONTO‑EYE through interviews, workshops, journey mapping, and prototyping, then implemented the program at a single clinical site. The primary focus is whether providing rideshare transport improves adherence to ophthalmology visits, while also gathering implementation outcomes. Participants are established clinic patients who have Medicaid insurance, a history of diabetic retinopathy, live within 25 miles of the clinic, and speak English.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are established patients with a history of diabetic retinopathy who have Medicaid insurance, live within 25 miles of the clinic, and speak English.

Not a fit: Patients without Medicaid, those living farther than 25 miles from the clinic, non‑English speakers, or people who already have reliable transportation are unlikely to benefit from this intervention.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the program could increase appointment attendance and reduce delays in DR care by removing transportation barriers for Medicaid patients.

How similar studies have performed: Rideshare and transportation programs have improved appointment attendance in other healthcare settings, but applying a co‑designed rideshare intervention specifically for Medicaid patients with diabetic retinopathy is relatively novel.
