Preventing vomiting in children with cancer using machine learning
Prevention of Vomiting in Pediatric Oncology Inpatients Using Machine Learning
This study is testing if a computer program can predict which children with cancer are likely to vomit after starting treatment, so doctors can give them better care and help them feel more comfortable.

What this trial studies
This trial aims to determine if a machine learning model can predict the risk of vomiting in pediatric cancer patients within 96 hours of admission. By identifying patients at high risk, the study seeks to implement targeted interventions to reduce vomiting episodes and improve quality of life. The model is based on data collected from the patients' medical history and is designed to enhance the care pathway for managing chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting. Pharmacists will play a key role in communicating the risk predictions to the medical team and ensuring appropriate antiemetic treatments are administered.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are pediatric patients admitted to the oncology service at SickKids.
Not a fit: Patients who are discharged before the prediction time will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could significantly reduce vomiting episodes in pediatric cancer patients, improving their overall quality of life.
How similar studies have performed: Preliminary work has shown promise in using machine learning for predicting vomiting outcomes, indicating potential for success in this approach.
