Preventing peanut allergy through skin exposure and processing methods

TRANS-FOODS: Preventing Peanut Allergy Through Improved Understanding of the Transcutaneous Sensitisation Route, Novel Food Processing and Skin Care Adaptations

NA · King's College London · NCT05407012

What this trial studies

This project investigates how peanut allergens interact with the skin, particularly in individuals with skin barrier defects. It aims to determine if peanut proteins can penetrate the skin through massage and whether this effect is heightened in those with conditions like atopic dermatitis. The study will also explore the detection of peanut proteins in skin fluid and their potential to activate immune responses in allergic individuals. Additionally, it will assess if using a barrier-enhancing cream can reduce the absorption of these allergens through the skin.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates include healthy adults and those with dry skin or atopic dermatitis who are willing to participate in the study.

Not a fit: Patients with a history of peanut allergy or those who have a positive skin prick test to peanuts will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to new strategies for preventing peanut allergies, particularly in vulnerable populations.

How similar studies have performed: While the focus on cutaneous allergen exposure is relatively novel, similar studies have shown promise in understanding food allergies and their prevention.
