Preoperative nutrition screening and counseling for surgical patients
Prevalence of Preoperative Malnutrition and Changes in Nutritional Status Following Preoperative Nutrition Education in Surgical Patients Attending a Preoperative Clinic
This project will see if preoperative nutrition screening and education can improve weight and nutrition status in adults enrolled in the ERAS program before elective surgery.

What this trial studies
This observational project screens adults enrolled in the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) program at Siriraj Hospital for malnutrition using the SPENT tool and a modified Nutrition Alert Form (NAF). It records the prevalence of malnutrition or nutrition risk at the preoperative clinic and documents any nutrition education provided through the SiPAP prehabilitation referral. Changes in body weight and nutrition status from the preoperative visit to the time of surgery will be extracted from clinical records. Patients with incomplete nutritional records are excluded from analysis.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults (≥18 years) enrolled in the ERAS program, referred to SiPAP for prehabilitation before elective surgery, screened with the SPENT tool, and with complete clinical nutrition records are ideal candidates.
Not a fit: Patients not enrolled in ERAS, undergoing emergency surgery, lacking complete nutritional records, or already receiving targeted preoperative nutrition therapy are unlikely to benefit from this protocol.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the approach could help identify and correct malnutrition before surgery, reducing complications and improving postoperative recovery.
How similar studies have performed: Previous literature supports that preoperative nutrition optimization and ERAS-related measures (e.g., carbohydrate loading, reduced fasting, early feeding) can improve recovery, though routine preoperative malnutrition screening is not yet universally implemented.
