What this trial studies

This single-site interventional trial randomizes eligible transmasculine and non-binary adults to receive a standardized educational handout about the benefits and risks of ovary retention versus removal or to usual care prior to their initial surgical consultation. The handout is provided at the time of an initial survey and aims to standardize preoperative counseling. The intervention focuses on improving patient knowledge and decision-making around oophorectomy as part of gender-affirming hysterectomy. Participants are English-speaking people assigned female at birth, aged 18–65, seeking hysterectomy with or without oophorectomy at the University of Minnesota.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal participants are English-speaking transmasculine or non-binary individuals assigned female at birth, ages 18–65, who want a gender-affirming hysterectomy and have not already had their ovaries removed.

Not a fit: People who were born without ovaries or a uterus, those who have already had a bilateral oophorectomy, or non-English speakers are not expected to benefit from this intervention.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the handout could improve patients' understanding of risks and benefits and support clearer, more informed decisions about ovary removal.

How similar studies have performed: Educational handouts and standardized preoperative counseling have improved patient knowledge and decision quality in other surgical settings, but applying this approach specifically to oophorectomy decisions in transmasculine care is relatively novel.
