Predicting aortic dilatation and rupture using advanced MRI techniques

Prediction of Aortic Dilation and Rupture in Different Predisposing Pathologies A Prospective Clinical Study

Observational Kuopio University Hospital · NCT05065996

This study is trying to see if advanced MRI techniques can help predict which patients with a dilated aorta are at risk for serious problems like rupture, so they can get the right follow-up care.

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to identify prognostic imaging parameters using 4D flow MRI to predict aortic dilatation and rupture in patients. It consists of three subtrials: the first focuses on identifying flow parameters characteristic of a dilated aorta, the second tests these parameters in clinical imaging follow-ups, and the third investigates the molecular pathology and genetics of the aorta in at-risk patients. The goal is to improve patient management by identifying those who require more intensive imaging follow-up.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates include patients with aortic dilatation who are scheduled for imaging follow-up at Kuopio University Hospital.

Not a fit: Patients who lack cooperation or have contraindications to MRI will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to better risk stratification and management of patients at high risk for aortic rupture.

How similar studies have performed: While there is emerging data on the use of 4D flow MRI, this specific approach to predicting aortic dilatation and rupture is novel and has not been extensively tested.
