What this trial studies

This interventional study aims to evaluate the clinical and psychosocial effects of participating in power wheelchair soccer among individuals with severe motor impairments due to neuromuscular lesions. Conducted at a single center, the study will recruit up to twenty participants who use power wheelchairs in their daily lives. Assessments will be performed before, during, and after the soccer season, which runs from November 2023 to June 2024, focusing on both physical load and psychosocial outcomes. Each participant will undergo evaluations every three months, with additional assessments related to the sport's physical demands.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are males and females aged 12 to 50 with severe motor impairments who regularly use a power wheelchair and are committed to a power wheelchair soccer team.

Not a fit: Patients who practice another adaptive sport regularly or have severe cognitive impairments affecting their ability to participate may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance the quality of life and social engagement for individuals with severe motor impairments.

How similar studies have performed: While similar studies on adaptive sports have shown positive outcomes, this specific approach to power wheelchair soccer is relatively novel.
