What this trial studies
This study aims to pilot test an adapted version of the Teen Marijuana Check Up (TMCU) specifically for persistent cannabis users experiencing their first episode of psychosis. The intervention will be tailored to address the unique risks associated with cannabis use in this population, providing education on safer cannabis practices and fostering collaborative planning to enhance treatment engagement and medication adherence. The study will involve collecting quantitative data from cannabis-using patients and qualitative interviews with patients, family members, and clinicians to inform the adaptation of the intervention. A pilot of the adapted intervention will then be conducted to assess its feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary impact.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are individuals aged 13-35 with a recent diagnosis of a schizophrenia spectrum or other psychotic disorder who are currently using cannabis.
Not a fit: Patients who do not meet the inclusion criteria or are not currently using cannabis may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this intervention could help reduce cannabis-related harm and improve treatment outcomes for young individuals with first episode psychosis.
How similar studies have performed: While this approach is innovative, similar interventions targeting substance use in psychosis have shown promise, suggesting potential for success.
