Pictorial check of task frequency and upper‑limb avoidance (PETRA)

PETRA: Pictorial Assessment of Task Occurrence and Upper Limb Avoidance Behaviors

Observational University Hospital, Angers · NCT07031791

This will test a new pictorial questionnaire (PETRA) with adults referred for suspected thoracic outlet syndrome to measure how often they do common tasks and whether they avoid using their affected arm.

What this trial studies

Researchers at Angers University Hospital will test the feasibility of PETRA, a pictorial questionnaire derived from the ADAP‑shoulder scale, to capture task frequency and avoidance behaviors in patients with suspected thoracic outlet syndrome. Adult patients referred for suspected TOS will complete PETRA during outpatient visits, alongside routine measures such as DASH and SF‑36, to compare responses, completion time, and usability. The observational protocol emphasizes lateralized items and frequency scoring that existing questionnaires may not capture, and includes translation/local adaptation for French use. Findings will inform whether PETRA is practical for clinical use and ready for larger validation studies.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults referred to Angers University Hospital for suspected thoracic outlet syndrome who can understand and complete questionnaires are the intended participants.

Not a fit: Patients unwilling or unable to complete the questionnaire or to understand the study objectives are unlikely to receive benefit from participation.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, PETRA could give clinicians a quicker, clearer picture of how thoracic outlet symptoms affect daily arm use and help target rehabilitation.

How similar studies have performed: A related pictorial tool (ADAP‑shoulder) has been proposed but not translated or widely validated in French, so PETRA is a novel, localized feasibility test.
