Oregano and basil leaves for people with unstable angina

Effects of Increasing Polyphenol Intake by Consumption of Oregano and Basil Leaves on Plasma Inflammatory and Lipid Factors and Total Urinary Polyphenol in Patients With Unstable Angina

Not applicable Interventional Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences · NCT07123181

What this trial studies

This interventional study compares standard treatment with an increased dietary intake of oregano and basil leaves in patients who recently experienced unstable angina. Participants assigned to the intervention will be instructed to consume these herbs regularly while researchers collect blood and urine samples. Primary measurements include plasma inflammatory markers, lipid factors, and total urinary polyphenol levels. Patients with recent STEMI, planned bypass surgery, advanced liver or kidney disease, active inflammatory or autoimmune conditions, or pregnancy are excluded.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults who recently had unstable angina, can eat oregano and basil as directed, and can attend follow-up visits at the study center are ideal candidates.

Not a fit: Patients with STEMI, those scheduled for coronary bypass grafting, people with liver cirrhosis or end-stage kidney disease, those with inflammatory or autoimmune diseases or on systemic glucocorticoids, and pregnant or breastfeeding people are unlikely to benefit or be eligible.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the intervention could lower inflammatory markers and improve lipid profiles, which may help reduce future cardiovascular risk.

How similar studies have performed: Epidemiological studies link higher polyphenol intake to lower cardiovascular risk, but randomized interventions specifically using oregano and basil in unstable angina are limited and largely untested.
