Optimizing maintenance of fully implanted venous catheters for cancer patients
Maintenance Optimization of the Fully Implanted Venous Catheter
NA · Clinical Academic Center (2CA-Braga) · NCT05411666

What this trial studies
This study evaluates the necessity and frequency of maintenance for fully implanted central venous catheters (CVCTI) used in cancer patients. It compares two approaches: maintaining the catheter with saline solution versus no maintenance at all. The goal is to clarify existing discrepancies in maintenance practices across different cancer centers and to establish a standardized approach. By assessing the outcomes of these two methods, the study aims to improve patient care and catheter management.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are cancer patients over 18 years old who have undergone placement of a fully implanted central venous catheter for chemotherapy within the last 10 weeks.
Not a fit: Patients with metastases, those on anticoagulant medication, or individuals with a history of CVCTI-related adverse events may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to more effective and standardized maintenance practices for central venous catheters, enhancing patient comfort and reducing complications.
How similar studies have performed: While there is ongoing debate regarding catheter maintenance practices, this specific approach has not been extensively tested in prior studies, making it a novel investigation.
