What this trial studies

This study aims to observe how leukemia treatment affects gut health, specifically the microbiome, and how quickly recovery occurs post-treatment. It will monitor the nutritional status and gut health of children aged 0-16 undergoing treatment for acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), or Burkitt lymphoma/leukemia. Measurements will be taken during routine medical appointments at Great Ormond Street Hospital, focusing on the impact of nutrition and feeding on gut recovery. The study seeks to understand the relationship between chemotherapy-induced intestinal mucositis and overall recovery.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are children aged 0-16 diagnosed with AML, HLH, or Burkitt lymphoma/leukemia.

Not a fit: Patients over 16 years old or those with inflammatory bowel diseases like ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved nutritional strategies that enhance recovery and overall health in children undergoing leukemia treatment.

How similar studies have performed: While studies on gut health in cancer patients exist, this specific observational approach focusing on pediatric leukemia and its nutritional implications is relatively novel.
