What this trial studies
This observational study aims to gather data on the prevalence of COVID-19 among pediatric surgical patients aged 2-17 years. It involves performing rapid antigen tests on these patients to identify asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic infections. The study will collect various data points, including test results, patient demographics, surgical history, and COVID-19 exposure information. The goal is to better understand the epidemiology of COVID-19 in this population and its potential implications for public health.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are pediatric surgical patients aged 2-17 years who can provide informed consent.
Not a fit: Patients who have had a COVID-19 diagnosis in the past six months or have a history of nasal bleeding or coagulopathy may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide valuable insights into the prevalence of COVID-19 in children undergoing surgery, helping to inform safety protocols and patient management.
How similar studies have performed: While there is limited data specifically on pediatric surgical patients, similar studies have shown the importance of understanding COVID-19 epidemiology in various populations, indicating potential for success.
