What this trial studies

The MINUS-trial is a multicentric prospective observational study that aims to gather data on the incidence of urinary tract infections (UTIs) following the removal of ureteral stents in patients aged 18 and older. Participants will have their stents removed either in an outpatient setting or at home, with or without antibiotic prophylaxis based on the standard care of the participating center. Urine samples will be collected before stent removal, and patients will complete a questionnaire to report any UTI symptoms post-removal. The study seeks to identify risk factors for post-stent removal UTIs and compare infection rates between different removal methods.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults aged 18 and older who have had a ureteral stent placed during an endoscopic procedure and have a negative urine culture prior to stent removal.

Not a fit: Patients with permanent indwelling catheters, pregnant individuals, or those with a recent history of urinary tract infections may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved guidelines for antibiotic use and reduced incidence of urinary tract infections after stent removal.

How similar studies have performed: While there is limited data on this specific approach, the study addresses a significant gap in current guidelines regarding antibiotic prophylaxis for stent removal.
