Non-invasive spinal cord stimulation for improving movement after spinal cord injury
Non-invasive Spinal Cord Stimulation for Improving Movement: Neuromodulation With Spinal Stimulation Methods and Individualized Locomotor Training
This study is testing if a new type of electrical stimulation on the lower back can help people with partial spinal cord injuries improve their movement and walking ability.

What this trial studies
This project evaluates the effects of non-invasive lumbar spinal cord electrical stimulation on motor function in individuals with incomplete spinal cord injuries. Participants will undergo a series of assessments and locomotor training sessions that incorporate trans-spinal electrical stimulation alongside treadmill stepping exercises. The study aims to determine if this combined approach enhances locomotor performance and exercise capacity in individuals who have retained some ability to stand or walk. The intervention consists of 12 training sessions over four weeks, followed by assessments to measure improvements in motor function.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are individuals aged 20 to 65 with chronic incomplete spinal cord injuries who experience difficulties with trunk and lower limb function.
Not a fit: Patients with genetic or degenerative causes of spinal injury or those requiring ventilatory support may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could significantly enhance motor recovery and functional independence for patients with spinal cord injuries.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown promising results with similar non-invasive electrical stimulation techniques, indicating potential for success in this approach.
